Community Involvement

Digital preservation of scholarly literature is a global need and responsibility requiring involvement, expertise, and cooperation of many individuals and organizations. We are deeply engaged with the digital preservation community to ensure we contribute to, share, and learn from the efforts of others.

  Koninklijke Bibliotheek, the National Library of the Netherlands (KB)

  Koninklijke Bibliotheek and Portico are partners in the Safe Places Network; they share technical and organizational knowledge and expertise, cooperating in processes for ingest of publishers content. Koninklijke Bibliotheek holds an off-line copy of the Portico archive for safekeeping.

  JSTOR/Harvard Object Validation Environment (JHOVE)

  With funding from the Library of Congress under its National Digital Information Infrastructure Preservation Program (NDIIPP), the California Digital Library, Portico, and Stanford University are collaborating on a two year project to develop and deploy JHOVE2, the next-generation of the JHOVE validation tool, providing enhanced performance, streamlined APIs, and significant new features. Portico is working on the PDF and SGML modules.

• LIFE Project Advisory Board

  Eileen Fenton, EVP Content & Technology Services and Portico Managing Director, was a member of the advisory board of this project, which examined the life cycle of the collection and preservation of digital materials. The project, which was funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), was a collaboration between the University College London Library Services and the British Library.

  National Information Standards Organization (NISO)

  Bruce Heterick, VP, Outreach & Participation Services, serves on the NISO Board of Directors and on the Knowledge Base and Related Tools (KBART) Working Group. Evan Owens, VP, Content Management, serves as a member of the NISO Architecture Committee and of the NISO Standardized Markup for Journal Articles Working Group (NLM Tag Set).
